Train with Prof. João Ferreira — one of Portugal's most experienced BJJ black belts — in Lisbon's historic Alfama district. Technical, welcoming, drop-ins always welcome.
Lisbon is the most welcoming city in Europe — everyone ends up here eventually. The mat should feel the same way. I've had people come in for a single class while on holiday and end up training with us for six months. That's what this place is built for.
João Ferreira grew up in Porto and began training BJJ at 16 under Prof. Nuno Oliveira, one of the first generation of Portuguese black belts. After earning his own black belt in 2012, he relocated to Lisbon and founded Alfama BJJ in the city's oldest neighborhood.
A two-time Portuguese National Champion, Prof. Ferreira has competed across Europe including the European Championships in Lisbon and the British Open in London. He has produced multiple national-level competitors and dozens of international practitioners who have passed through his doors.
His classes are technical and methodical — reflecting his background as a secondary school science teacher before BJJ became his full-time career. All classes are taught in English and Portuguese.
Structured technique classes covering fundamentals through advanced positions. All levels welcome, gi provided for visitors.
Submission wrestling with a leg lock emphasis. Popular with Lisbon's growing MMA and grappling community.
Lisbon sees thousands of BJJ travelers every year. You're welcome at any class — message us before you arrive.
Lisbon has become one of the most popular cities in Europe for long-term travelers, remote workers, and tourists from the UK, US, and beyond. English is spoken everywhere — and that includes our mat.
We're based in Alfama, a 10-minute walk from the city center, and we see visiting practitioners every single week. The door is always open.
First class free for visiting practitioners. Message us ahead, show up, and train in one of Europe's most beautiful cities.
